What fabric do you want for your wedding gown?
One thing I have learned from brides-to-be is that they are firm when it comes to what kind of fabric they want for their gown. I can show them a wedding gown and they will love everything about it except for the fabric used. So what kinds of fabrics are used to make wedding gowns?
- Silk is the most admired and priciest wedding gown fabric. Silk is a smooth and soft natural fiber. Silk is woven to create a ton of other fabrics such as: satin, chiffon, charmeuse, tulle and organza.
- One of the most common fabrics used is satin. Satin is a smooth fabric that is often used in bridal gowns because of its fantastic draping. It is a heavy fabric with a high sheen on one side.
- Chiffon is a sheer, flowing fabric that drapes well on the body. Chiffon is often layered because of its transparency, making it popular for overskirts, sheer sleeves and wraps.
- Charmeuse is lightweight and soft. It is a satin-like fabric with a more subdued luster.
- Tulle is a netting made of silk, nylon or rayon. Primarily used for skirts, veils or for under skirts to create fullness.
- Organza is crisp and sheer like chiffon, but with a stiffer texture similar in effect to tulle. Organza is popular for skirts, sleeves, backs and overlays.
- Taffeta is a medium weight fabric with a varying sheen. It is crisp and smooth with a slight rib.
- Brocade is a popular winter fabric. It is a Jacquard-woven fabric with an ornate raised design.
There are many fabrics and styles to choose from. Keep in mind if your wedding is in the hot July heat, a heavy gown made of brocade might not be your ideal choice.
