There was a time when etiquette would strongly dictate a certain tuxedo for a certain time of day – or that you weren’t allowed to bend the rules on how formal the tuxedo should be for the venue where your wedding would be held.

The only hard fast rule that applies today is that the groom needs to honor your gown by matching the style and formality. Everything centers around your gown. Here’s a few tips to ensure that your groom is truly honoring your gown – and honoring the importance of the moment when you both say, “I do”.

• If your gown is formal, full length and elegant with a long train and a mid to long veil Groom: Black or navy tuxedo with a bow tie (preferably white / ivory to match gown).

• If your gown is elegant and full length with a mid to short train and a mid to short veil Groom: Black or colored tuxedo with a bow tie or a Windsor knot tie .

• If your gown is simple and full length with no train and a short veil or no veil at all Groom: A tuxedo or a dark suit.

• If your gown is short with no train and no veil Groom: A suit or possibly dress pants and a vest and tie or even a shirt with rolled up sleeves for a more casual look.

Another great way to spice up the day if you’ve picked a more formal theme, but want to have some fun with the tuxedos, is to add some accessories that will only come out when you want them to – or at the reception – try these ideas!

1. Add colored socks and suspenders.
2. Choose a second vest to change into at the reception.
3. Bring a second tuxedo to change into at the reception.

Honor the importance of this day, this moment and your gown by dressing your groom in something that truly shows he’s special and he cared enough to dress for the occasion.
